Colour is the primary value factor—vivid, saturated tones are most desirable. Clarity should be good; visible inclusions may lower value depending on the variety.
Because garnet is usually untreated, natural colour is a selling point.

With a hardness of 6.5–7.5, garnet is suitable for regular wear but can be scratched by harder stones.
It should be protected from sharp impacts and stored away from diamonds and sapphires.
